can i use mosaic tiles on my bedroom wall? Also i don’t know the process could someone please explain? I also have a mirror on my bedroom wall and i plan to use the mosaic tiles as a border frame. But i won’t be glueing the tiles to the mirror but rather to the wall but it will still have the mirror having a frame…hope that made sense. Is it a good idea?

Sure you can use the tiles in both places. Since this is a non wet area, a simple and easy to use mastic ( a glue) can be used to attach the tiles. Then grout as normal. Most mosaic tile will be approximately the same thickness as a mirror, if the mirror is attached to the wall and not a hanging mirror.
If you want the mirror to hang as you say, you can tile directly behind it and leave out a tile were the hook will be or there are ways to do the hook through the tile.
Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL

I’m having a new house built. So I’m in the process of choosing flooring, tiles, etc. Looking for a cheap suggestion for a kitchen back splash. I found a beautiful glass mosaic tile, but it is 3times the cost of regular tiles. Can anyone suggest something that will reflect light, look classy but is less costly? Open to all suggestions. Silestone is also too expensive.Thank you.

There are so many wonderful alternatives. If you are looking for a glass type finish I have a few suggestions.

1. Have a piece of plexi glass cut to size. Put in holes enough to lightly secure it to the back. You don’t need alot of holes ~ 6 for a 12 foot length. You can cover the entire back splash or just the stove and sink area. Get decorative screws for the holes. On the wall behind put wallpaper, flat or textured paint, stencil, mirrors, tin can lids, art work, material, pictures, a hand painted mural….anything. Then bolt the plexi over it. When you want to alter your decor just unscrew it and change the backing.

http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/uimages/sf/4-15-backsplash.jpg

2. Use ceiling tiles they are 24" x 24" Come in all colors and finishes and add a great look to the kitchen. http://picklemedia1.scrippsnetworks.com/pickle_media1/media/HGTV/na_migration/f9/Photo_Video_f9d2bf0f-c5a8-4249-ae13-54b0f3de5113_medium.jpg?0

3. Just paint it with a good alkyd paint. Then tile over the stove only.

4. Use beadboard with a scrubbable paint. http://cabinetembellishment.com/images/kitchen2.jpg

I’m working on a mosaic project and I bought some Wissmach glass tiles that are 12 by 8. I used a glass breaking tool to break it into all different shapes, not just squares. Problem is it took me 2 hours to do ONE tile!! Every mosaic and glass supply store I’ve seen only cuts into squares or triangles. Which I think makes for a less interesting mosaic. Please does anyone know of a place that sells irregular cut tiles?!?!?

It should not take that long to cut and break the glass. What tool are you using?

For that sort of project, I would recommend using wheeled glass nippers. I have a photo of them here:

http://www.silverartglassjewelry.com/articles/how-to-make-fused-glass-cabochons.html

Basically, you use them to chunk the glass quickly- they work almost like scissors, except you cut once, instead of trying to cut out shapes. In this way, you can quickly and easily chunk out a number of different sizes and angles which will be somewhat random and better for mosaics.

Just be sure to aim the cut pieces towards the work surface and wear goggles if you are not used to shielding the nippers with one hand.

I live in Milwaukee and have not found any tile I really like. I was told Illinois had a lot more to offer. So I am wondering where to go. I would like the cheaper the better, but I also want a lot of variety.

Mainly I am looking for mosaic glass tile back splash pieces. But I am also going to need a flooring tile as well.
Any help….?

My favorite is Century Tile. The website century-tile.com will give you the locations of their stores. You might like the Mount Prospect and Itasca locations. Glass mosaic tile is rather expensive, and a little tricky to install, but they have good men and women working there who can help you. They have tons of floor tile in different price ranges.

Can you install mosaic glass tile (the kind that’s on a mesh backing) directly on painted drywall? The instructions at the store say to first install a backer board. Is that really necessary? Thanks!

First off, you -can- install it on drywall, but it is recommended that you do use a backerboard for most instances. In this case, you are fine to do that though. If you do go over the drywall, use a medium to fine grit sandpaper and rough the surface up before applying your thinset or mortar. Some prefer to have the walls pre-primed before applying it, but i’ve seen it done without before.

A modified -thinset is the best way to go in the long run since Mastic isn’t good for water prone areas, but the mastic will be much easier to work with, especially if you are a first time DIY’er. Whichever you pick, make -sure- that you get a white adhesive. The gray may show through your glass tile and change the look. Some places also sell thin-set specifically fortified for glass tile as well, so that’s also a good bet.

Hope that helps and best of luck! Let me know if you get any other questions~

A nice wood frame would work well. Make a wood frame the right size, or have one made. Finish it nicely, and it will be gorgeous.

Hi, I have just put in a backsplash of glass mosaic tiles on the 12 by 12 sheets from home depot,on to the drywall withour backer board it came out great! But I went to ask about the sealer? It is very confusing grout lines are very small and a lot of the product applications come in a bottle with a little brush. But they all warn about getting on the glass/tiles. If I spend 4 hours sealing and it gets on the tile and looks bad my wife is gonna kill me!!! Does it need to be sealed?

You don’t have to seal the grout, but it helps keep it from staining. Make sure you use a water based sealer, probably tagged as Acrylic. Keep a damp rag handy. Do a small section with sealer and wipe off the excess with the damp rag. Even if some dries on there it should easily come off of glass. That is unless this is a crackled glass, something with fissures in the surface. That could absorb the sealer and make it impossible to get it off. If it’s smooth glass then no problem. I’ve used epoxy grout on glass and it comes right off. Sealer is nothing compared to that.

I am looking for really inexpensive glass mosaic tile sheets to do my shower in my bathroom. I found some for about $16.99 a square foot, but I am looking for way cheaper since we need about 60-70 square feet total. I would like something unique like iridescent or pearl/shell look. If I can only find solids really cheap than I can always accent tile with something nicer. Anyone know of any websites I should check out with tile under $7 a square foot or bundle of sheets for a good price? Any help is much appreciated Thanks!
