The "old Cathedral" or "Rotunda" of Brescia erected toward the end of the XI century from the teachers comacini (guild of enterprises itineranti composed by specialized masons), on the rests of the ancient basilica iemale (winter, from the Latin hieme = "winter") of Saint Maria Maggiore of the There-VII century, destroyed probably in the fire of the 1097. It contains masterpieces of Palm the Young one, of the Moretto, of the Romanino. The building is in Plaza of the Cathedral and it represents a perfect symbol of the Romanesque architecture.
The Romanesque church was built toward the end of the XI century on the rests of a preceding church, the ancient cathedral winter of S. Maria Maggiore. Its circular plant would recall the church of the S. Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Along the inside perimeter it races a deambulatorio while to the entry bishop Berardo Mays’ sepulchral monument is set in red marble in Verona. In the XV century was widened the zone presbiteriale that assumed a square plant with two side chapels devoted to the SSs. Crosses and to the Holy Sacrament.Under the presbytery the crypt is found of S. Filastrio, bishop bresciano, datable between the VIII and the IX century. The time of the presbytery preserves better the preserved decorative cycle with the symbols of the Evangelists and the lamb vessilifero. From some openings in the floor they are visible the mosaic decorations of the ancient Roman thermal baths
