Back splash – do we seal before travertine tile is put on the wall?

Posted by admin on March 7th, 2010 and filed under travertine marble | 3 Comments »

We are tiling our kitchen back splash with travertine tile/ tumbled marble tile.
Should we seal the tile before it is on the wall or seal it after it is on the wall?
    Thank you.

Put the back splash tile on – then take a sponge and apply sealer to tile. Do not get sealer on edges that grout will fill in – put just on surface of tile. This will keep grout from sticking into small holes/dips in surface of tile. Let sealer dry good – then grout.
Apply blue painters tape to edge of top up against wall to keep grout from getting all over the top. Apply about 2-3 strips of 2" blue painters tape here and also on any edges of wall cabinets/window trim etc.
After grout is done and cleaned up – Apply grout sealer.
Set first row of wall tile on a yardstick placed on the surface of the top. This will give you an even grout line starting off on the bottom. Use a *fast grab adhesive which will keep tile from sliding around.
Take off any electrical covers and apply black electricians tape around the sides of the terminals on these receptacles/switches.
Do a good job – take your time.

Master bathroom remodel: What do you think about this?

Posted by admin on February 6th, 2010 and filed under travertine marble | 2 Comments »

The house is in need of some updating. We are set on tile, and like the natural looks of travertine, marble and granite. (not in combination though!) It is the "lowball" in a multi-million dollar neighborhood (valued $550,000) and we want to bring in some high class tastes and style designs to bring it into the million dollar range.

Our house currently has 16 year old ceramic tile (off white and tan with brown/tan grout) throughout the kitchen, entry and powder room. In the rest of the bathrooms we have vinyl and in the master we have carpet.

We have searched high and low for tile to match the existing, but just can’t find it anywhere.

If we wanted to go all out with travertine, would it look mismatched with the ceramic that we can’t afford to replace?

It’s hard to tell without photos. You don’t necessarily have to match the old tile, especially if they’re in different rooms. I wouldn’t want a seam between the 2 types of tiles going through the middle of a room…
If you want to increase your resale value, you should save up to replace ALL the tile. The old tile sounds like it needs to go.

Even vinyl in the bathrooms doesn’t exactly scream $550,000 house – no offense!
