During the British occupation of Greece, Lord Elgin ordered his men to saw the Parthenons marble in half to decorate his home back in England. Now Greece wants to unite the halves in its modern museum.
Between the Acropolis and a museum whose architecture is dedicated to it, stands two apartments facing the threat of demolition. One is a rare example of 1930s deco, the other, late 1800s neo-classical.

Very interesting video. I wasn’t even aware of the controversy. In reading through the comments I would like to add one thing. It’s good to be proud of your country, no matter what country that is…how silly for people to argue points by saying my country is better than yours because mine is older, or your country is so bad because you think this or that. Peace is so much better than childish arguments.

as far as our coultoure there are hundreds of custoums survived from ancient greece (like the fiest of god deonisus), the others became christianised.
plus u being american, acountry with no history, culture, costumes older than 200 years is very funny critisizing us.
in this 400 years we didnt only took turkish costumes, but they took greek coultoure and symbolism (ex: the turkish flag is the greek symbol of godess artemis to whom was dedicated of the city byzantium.

yes we were under ocupation for 400 years, but we rebeled, didn’t we? that shows that the national identity and culture existed, the time of the rebelion untill the balkan wars we spoke classic greek which is very similar to ancient greek, i agree to the fact that modern greek is not that close, but this happens to every language, there is no single language survived fully with no changes throughout history.
our language is 4000 years old so its only natural to evolve.

The Greece of today …
The Greece of today is NOT the greece of there ancestors. 400 years of turkish slavery and Ocupation has changed greek culture forever. Modern greeks dont speak ancient greek. Modern greeks are not fair haired like there ancestors. Even the Modern Greek national costume is turkish in origin.

British occupation of Greece in the description is incorrect. Ottoman occupation is correct.
As for the debate. Ofcourse the Brittish museum under their law, is not obligated to return the parthenon marbles. But imagine this:
During WW2 Germans actually seized your Westminster Palace, and during their occupation sold half the stonework to an other country. Wouldn’t you want them back? Now put in perspective that parthenon is 2.5times older and is THE representation of greek culture.
